Photographer of The Week

Photographer of The Week: Mihaela Noroc

Thirty-nine-year-old Mihaela Noroc of Bucharest, Romania is a portrait photographer who has for the past eleven years been traveling to over one hundred countries to photograph the beauty of women. Mihaela grew up in the 1990’s where unemployment and poverty in eastern europe meant her family moved often for work opportunities. Having to attend a new school almost every year gave Mihaela her ability to adapt to new environments.

At the age of sixteen her father gifted her an old second hand camera. Mihaela first practice taking photos of her sister and mother, her images focused on simplicity and keeping her images feeling natural. At night she would turn the bathroom into a dark room to develop her and print her photos.

During her time at college to study photography, the digital boom for photography began, this caused Miheala to see her self as just an average photographer among millions of others who now had access to digital cameras. Miheala discouraged by the lack of encouragment from her professors and from her internalized impression her abilities quit photography. She told her self the world didn’t need another mediocre artist.

Until 2013 Mihaela took on work that would be considered practical to earn a living, she took no joy in her work life. In 2013 Mihaela took a trip to Ethiopia that inspired her to pick up her camera again. That trip was the begining of a nine year project that culminated in a book called the Atlas of Beauty , public speaking, more travel, exhibits and a second book that comes out in march of 2025 “The Power of Women”.

When looking through Mihaela’s work the use of color in her photos really compliments her subjects. Her familiarity with the uses of color comes from growing up with a father whos passion was painting. Mihaela has credited his influence for her appreciation of color. Much of Mihaela’s work highlights the textures and patterns. All of her photos are well lit and show a strong appreciation for culture and diversity. The best place to view Mihaela’s work, if your unable to be show patronage threw purchasing the Atlas of beauty, is her instagram accounts. There are currently two accounts one strictly dedicated to the publication and a personal account that features all her projects and events. I’ve linked them both down bellow as well as the main website for “ Atlas of Beauty”.
